A LINE IN THE SAND
Drew Nikonowicz
5.5.23-4.27.23
Opening Reception | Friday, May 5: 4-8pm
A Line in the Sand is a project that explores ways of seeing and being seen. Using photography, 3D printed tapestries, laser engraved mirrors, and LED panels, Drew Nikonowicz navigates the dissonance of an identity. Self-portraits are interrupted and mediated by screens, mirrors, and abstraction. Acts of surveillance are captured through live-streaming software and direct messaging screenshots. Significant and insignificant boundaries are traversed physically and metaphorically, creating new realities that exist both upon and beyond the screen.
Drew Nikonowicz [he/him] (born in St. Louis Missouri) earned a BFA from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2016. His work employs analog photography, computer simulations, Community-building, 3D printing, Raspberry Pi’s, open-source software, and more to explore our relationship to modern technology and its contributions to self-actualization.
He has exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2015 he received the Aperture Portfolio Prize and the Lenscratch Student Prize. In 2017 Nikonowicz completed a one-year residency at Fabrica Research Centre. His first photobook, This World and Others Like It, was co-published by Yoffy Press and FW:Books in 2019. It was awarded Jurors' Special Mention at the 2019 Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards. Drew can be found hanging out with folks in his community discord, making art in his studio, and live-streaming art & games on Twitch. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of Arkansas
